Save hawksbill turtles from blast fishing and nesting habitat loss in El Salvador

— ICAPO, EcoViva, Coordinadora del Bajo Lempa, ViVAZUL/Plant a Fish, (2013)

Nearly 7,000 people of national and international origin urged the President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, and the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to protect hawksbills and their habitat in the Bahia de Jiquilisco. In response to the petition, the MCC sent an official statement affirming its commitment to ensuring that hawksbills and their habitat are not negatively impacted by MCC-supported projects. Because the MCC will be funding unprecedented levels of development along El Salvador’s coast in 2014, this commitment is an important victory for hawksbills and the local communities that protect them.

The Management Plan for the Bahia de Jiquilisco remains in draft phase and has yet to be approved.

More than 1,000 people from 55 countries urged the Salvadoran government to take immediate actions to eliminate blast fishing, or fishing with explosives, and to protect critical hawksbill nesting beaches in the Bahia de Jiquilisco, El Salvador. This petition helped us secure key meetings with the Vice-Minister of the Environment and the creation of an emergency action plan to reduce sea turtle mortality.
